What is Intel® Centrino® Duo Mobile Technology?
Mobile Intel® 945 Express Chipset w/ Intel® GMA 950 graphics and Intel® Core™ Duo Processors
The Intel Core Duo processor has a chipset designed just for it, the Mobile Intel® 945 Express Chipset. It has even better power consumption, and it offers a new 667 MHz FSB along with support for DDR2-667. It also increases memory support to 4 GB, and the graphics system is improved to the GMA950, which is about 20% faster than the GMA900 in 3D applications. Consider this a reminder that unless you run particularly 3D graphics intensive software (3D games, 3D modeling, very high end video editing), the GMA900/950 will work just fine for your use.
There are 3 versions of the Mobile Intel® 945 Express Chipset:
Mobile Intel® 945PM and 945GM - the only difference is that the GM includes integrated graphics, while the PM does not.
Mobile Intel® 945GMS - This one is tricky. Here are its differences: - includes Intel® GMA 950 graphics - only supports 1 SO-DIMM for 2 GB of memory - only supports Core Solo CPUs - DDR2-533 single channel memory only - no discrete graphics option
Be on the lookout for the 945GMS. It doesn't have nearly the same features as the 945GM or 945PM.
Also included with the Intel® Centrino® Duo Mobile system is the Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection. It differs from the previous Intel® wireless cards by connecting to the computer via a PCI Express x1 slot, it's smaller, and it's supposedly more immune to interference. It also supports these extra features: - Business Class Wireless Suite with Enhanced VoIP Quality Technology and Optimal AP Selection Technology - Cisco Compatible Extensions v4 - Wake on WLAN
For the average person, these features will probably never come into play, though we suggest disabling wake-on-WLAN due to potential security hazards.
