GDDR2 vs. GDDR3

We've received a few questions over the past few weeks regarding GDDR3 memory use by the GPU in our laptops. Most were wondering how important it is. The simple answer is that it is a welcome incremental improvement, but nothing amazing. The primary improvements are a lower operating voltage, saving a little power and reducing heat, and they can tolerate a bit higher clock speed because of the reduced heat. That's it.

GDDR2: 2.5v GDDR3: 2.0v or 1.8v, depending on the manufacturer
